Sock Hop Dance brings Cherry Chase, community together for a cause

Cherry Chase Elementary School families put the sock in Sock Hop in January when a Family Fun Night dance turned into a fundraiser for the less fortunate.

Cherry Chase PTA members decided to combine one of their Family Fun Nights, which bring families together for free activities, with the idea of a school drive to help the community.014

Rather than charging admission for the family dance held on Jan. 29, Cherry Chase girl scouts asked for donations of new socks to give to Sunnyvale Community Services.

Families danced the night away, some in their 1950s glasses and satin jackets. Children had fun taking pictures with Sock Hop themed props and learning dance moves from the DJ.

By the end of the night there were 512 pairs of socks in various sizes of men’s, women’s, girl’s and boy’s ready to be donated, according to event organizer Tiffany Anderson.

“I had told Carolyn Alexander from SCS that our goal was 400, she’ll be so surprised, just like the girls,” Anderson said.

Sunnyvale Community Services said the delivery couldn’t have come at a better time.

“We were out of women’s socks completely,” Alexander said. “This will keep us stocked with socks for several months! We really appreciate the effort that went in to pulling this off.”

She added some of the socks will be shared with the homeless shelter as well in north Sunnyvale if they run low.

“That is a lot of feet [they] are helping to keep warm this cold season,” she said.
