As summer grows closer, so does our excitement about what’s to come at Sunnyvale Middle School — a 32,000 square foot, two-story, flexible classroom space, custom-built for our students!
While the Division of the State Architect considers our submission for final project approval, our facilities team and steering committee are working out details surrounding color selections and material finishes. With our design and school-site teams working collaboratively, we are on target for construction to start in June.
Summer work will begin with the demolition of six of the site’s existing portable classrooms. We will then relocate three other portables, which will be used by faculty and staff during construction.
Once that preparation work is complete, the team will shift their efforts to demolishing a portion of the asphalt blacktop and preparing to build the structural foundation. Then the real transformation begins.
The resulting product will be a brand-new two-story building for classrooms, program rooms, collaboration spaces, an art room, and an academic quad that will act as classroom extensions. The entire space will have new landscaping, trees, drought-tolerant plants, and other green initiatives, consistent with Sunnyvale School District values.
“In all, it should be a busy summer for our construction team at Sunnyvale Middle School and a giant step in the right direction for completing this project,” said Brandt Burns, Director of Facilities and Operations. “We are very much aware that we have our community to thank for this important work.”
This project is part of Sunnyvale School District’s Facility Master Plan, a comprehensive, long-term strategy to develop and maintain campus facilities that support effective teaching and learning. Maintenance, upgrades, and new construction at every phase of plan implementation are made possible by community support of local bond measures.
