Familiar Sunnyvale School District administrators take on new roles this year

The 2021-2022 school year brings many familiar SSD faces into new administrator roles.

 

This year we welcome Carly Sturm as Lakewood Tech EQ’s new principal. Carly is an accomplished educator with 18 years of experience. She joined the Sunnyvale School District in 2019 and has served the past two years as the Assistant Principal of Cumberland Elementary School. Prior to her arrival in Sunnyvale, she served as an Instructional Support Coach, 4th and 5th-grade teacher, and 7th grade English Language Arts teacher. Carly graduated from Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo, and received her Master’s Degree in Curriculum & Instruction from San José State University. She replaces Pamela Cheng who has accepted the position of Director of Instruction with the Campbell Union School District. Thank you to Dr. Cheng for your 21 years of service to the Sunnyvale School District community!

 

Lindsey Jacobson will be replacing Carly Sturm as Cumberland’s Assistant Principal. Lindsay Jacobson most recently served as an Instructional Coach with Education Services and has been with the Sunnyvale School District for 14 years. During her tenure, she has served in a number of district-level and site-based instructional roles, including experience as an Early Literacy Instructional Coach at Fairwood Explorer, as well as elementary teaching experience at Fairwood Explorer and Cherry Chase Elementary School. She also served as an Elementary Site Lead for summer school. Lindsay graduated from the University of California, Santa Cruz, and received her Master’s Degree in Curriculum and Instruction from the University of the Pacific. Lindsay is an energetic, collaborative educator with a passion for reaching every student and is well versed in the District’s curriculum and instructional practice.

 

Shana Riehl is now the Assistant Principal for Fairwood Elementary. Shana first came to the District in 2002. During her 19-year tenure, she has 12 years of elementary teaching experience, has served as a District Induction Mentor, and most recently served as the Instructional Coach at Columbia Middle School where she worked for the past three years. Shana’s strengths include the ability to support the professional growth of teachers and staff, outstanding communication skills, and a broad understanding of assessment and instructional practices. She is already familiar with the Fairwood community through her work at Columbia Middle School where she has worked with many Fairwood families. This is a new administrative position at Fairwood!

 

Vivian Matsuyama is now the Assistant Principal for Vargas Elementary. Vivian joined the District in 2017 as an Instructional Coach/Teacher on Special Assignment supporting Vargas Elementary School. Vivian brings a wealth of elementary teaching experience, as well as a deep understanding of English Language Development (ELD) instructional practices. In addition to her experience with the Sunnyvale School District, she also has taught 1st and 2nd grade, supported grades K-8 as an ELD Specialist and served as an Instructional Support Teacher. Vivian replaces John Austin who has accepted an opportunity outside the Bay Area. Thank you to Mr. Austin for your years of service to the students, staff, and families at Vargas!

 

 

Stacy Esquibel is now the District Preschool Program Manager. She first joined the District in 2017 as the Preschool Instructional Coach. Prior to joining Sunnyvale, Stacy worked as a Special Education Teacher, Early Childhood Implementation Specialist, and Education Specialist for 22 years. She brings a passion for early childhood development and has provided coaching, mentoring, and support to the District’s preschool teachers, special education preschool teachers, and paraprofessionals. This is a new position that will support and oversee the operations of the District’s Preschool Program.
