Future Chefs showcase their skills in virtual competition

Six Sunnyvale School District elementary students competed virtually on March 27th in Sodexo’s Future Chefs Challenge. The national initiative aims to get students thinking about making healthy food choices while encouraging them to get active and creative in the kitchen!

While we couldn’t compete in person this year, students did an excellent job creating videos of them making their special dishes. This year’s theme was International Dishes.

Judges included Superintendent Gallagher and Board of Education President Michelle Maginot, SSD Communications Coordinator Alia Wilson, and Google Pastry Chef Samantha van Gogh.

Congratulations to Tenaya Liao, a first-grader at Cumberland, who finished first place for her Pokémon breakfast recipe! Congratulations also to second place winner Riley Chang, a second-grader at Cherry Chase Elementary with her “Fish-Ket Ball” recipe, and to third place winner Noah Heidgerken, a second-grader from Fairwood, who made a crispy onigiri burger.

Congratulations to the other finalists on making fantastic recipes: Naysa Bhargava, a fifth-grader at Fairwood Explorer, made cream cheese rolls. Neil Bhat, a second-grader at Cherry Chase, made Neil’s Special Veggie Dumplings. Guruansh Singh, a first-grader at Ellis, made black chickpea salad.

Each chef got an award, medal, kids recipe book, a goodie bag from Chef Samantha, and a smartwatch!
First place also won a set of pot and pans.
Second place also won mixing bowls and measuring cups
Third place also won cutting boards and potholders.
