On February 4, 2012, Elizabeth (Liz) Hernandez was honored as Sunnyvale School District’s 2011 ‘Teacher of the Year’ and was awarded the Murphy Award for Educators, sponsored by the Sunnyvale Chamber of Commerce.
Mrs. Hernandez came to teaching following a career in finance and management. She was a resident in the Sunnyvale School district for many years and began as a student-teacher at San Miguel Elementary. Upon receiving her credential, she began her teaching career at San Miguel. She shared that she has always wanted to be a teacher and was fortunate to have her family’s support when she decided to return to school for her teaching credential.
Even after 13 years on the job, Mrs. Hernandez continually welcomes new challenges and is open to trying new ways of helping all of her students be successful, whatever their learning styles and individual needs might be. She enjoys working in a school district where personnel are supportive and understanding of each school’s special needs and praises San Miguel’s principal, Brenda Guy, as an encouraging and inspiring mentor to her teaching staff.
