Belle, Beast, Mrs. Potts, Lumière, and a cast of much-loved characters came to life in Sunnyvale Middle School’s recent production of “Beauty and the Beast.” The students began working on the production in late October and performed several shows in early February. Performers learned songs, dances, lines and all of the blocking for the show, and even painted sets and rehearsed together in their spare time. Babs, a grandmother of a former SMS student, scoured thrift shops and singlehandedly costumed the entire show. “She is a godsend!” said Donna Verret, the director of the show and an SMS eighth grade English and Drama teacher.
“Drama is quite the family! Everyone takes risks on stage and encourages each other at every turn. There are some magical songs in the play where the lighting, costumes and cast talent and enthusiasm make the moment shine!” said Verret. “It’s incredible to see the students and school community pitching in to make this a success.”
