The green thumbs with the Bishop Buds Junior Garden Club at Bishop Elementary have received some extra cash to help with their gardening in the form of a $2,000 grant from Whole Foods.
The school club, sponsored by the Sunnyvale Garden Club, gives fourth-graders at Bishop the chance to learn about gardening. Every Thursday, volunteers from the Sunnyvale Garden Club give students a lecture.
“They have to know a lot about rock soil, how soil is used, about plants and animals living in one habitat,” said Bishop teacher Veronica Villa.
The grant gives $2,000 exclusively to support educational gardens on the grounds of K-12 schools. Lauren Ledbetter, a Bishop parent who wanted to see the beloved garden program get a little extra boost, brought the Whole Foods grant to the attention of the students. Ledbetter’s day job involves grant writing.
