Sunnyvale School District Superintendent Ben Picard has announced the appointment of Nabil Shahin as Sunnyvale Middle School Principal for the 2014-2015 school year. Mr. Shahin replaces Dorothy Abreu-Coito who was recently promoted to Director of Instructional Services for the coming school year.
Mr. Shahin has been Assistant Principal for Instruction at Willow Glen Middle School in the San Jose Unified School District the past four years. Prior to his experience at Willow Glen, Mr. Shahin also served as Assistant Principal of Gunderson High School and as a classroom teacher at Hoover Middle School, both in San Jose Unified School District.
Mr. Shahin is a proud graduate of Cherry Chase Elementary, the former Sunnyvale Junior High School, and Homestead High School. He earned a bachelors degree and a teaching credential at San Jose State University and a masters degree in Media Arts at Massachusetts College of Art.
Mr. Shahin was selected from a strong pool of 40 applicants for the Sunnyvale Middle School post following two days of interviewing and a visit to Willow Glen Middle School by a team from Sunnyvale Middle School. Mr. Shahin’s track record, commitment to the Sunnyvale community, and ability to articulate a clear vision of high expectations for every student while maintaining a “whole child” focus were clearly evident throughout the process.
Superintendent Picard added, “We are very proud to have such an exceptional instructional leader return to his home community to serve our kids. I am grateful to the staff and parent community for their input and active participation in the selection process. I am confident Nabil will be a wonderful principal who will build on Ms. Abreu-Coito’s record of success at SMS.”
