The Sunnyvale Education Foundation (SEF) has long championed the value of a well-rounded education, with performing arts playing a vital role. This commitment was powerfully evident during SEF’s dynamic roundtable discussion and spotlight on student talent at our Annual Showcase.
In April, SEF hosted a roundtable that brought together parents, staff, and community members to discuss the value of performing arts and opportunities to expand this type of experience in the Sunnyvale School District (SSD). The conversation highlighted the deep enthusiasm families have for providing students with creative outlets through music, dance, and drama. Parents alike spoke passionately about the positive impact performing arts have on students’ confidence, communication skills, enthusiasm to attend school, and overall well-being. During the discussion, participants learned that one-third of SEF School Grant funds awarded to our schools in 2024-25 were used for performing arts programming. These funds supported a wide range of efforts—from new violas at Columbia Middle School to school musicals at Lakewood, San Miguel, and Vargas.
Despite the excitement and momentum, participants also noted common challenges: limited funding, vendor availability, and a growing student population that sometimes outpaces available resources. These challenges underscore the importance of collaboration between schools, families, and community partners.
The inspiring nature of the arts was beautifully illustrated at the Sunnyvale Education Foundation Annual Showcase. The event featured live music performed by Sunnyvale Middle School students under the direction of Charles Ancheta and a vibrant Danza Folclórica presentation by Columbia Middle School students, coordinated by parent leader Elsa Nuñez and Dyadyra Moya. Both performances received enthusiastic applause and reminded attendees of the joy and cultural richness that performing arts bring to school communities.
Looking Ahead – The Next Act
The Sunnyvale Education Foundation is committed to ensuring that the performing arts remain an essential part of every student’s educational experience in Sunnyvale schools. In the years ahead, SEF will work to deepen its investment in arts education, cultivate new partnerships, and advocate for sustainable funding that expands access and opportunity for all students. Whether in a classroom, auditorium, or community center, the stage should be a space where every child can express themselves, connect with others, and discover their full potential. SEF looks forward to collaborating with you to ensure that the performing arts and other enriched educational experiences remain a vibrant and accessible part of every child’s learning journey.
In addition to its commitment to performing arts, Sunnyvale Education Foundation supports a broad range of programs, including STEM initiatives, field trips, extracurricular activities, culinary arts, and cultural celebration. Through roundtables, showcases, and other community events, SEF continues to create space for meaningful community conversations and celebrations of student achievement. The roundtables are part of SEF’s ongoing series focused on educational equity and enrichment, addressing topics such as volunteer engagement and school gardens. These gatherings invite families, educators, and community members to share perspectives and work together on shared goals. SEF’s Annual Showcase brings the community together to experience student talent firsthand through demonstrations, presentations, and performances made possible by the foundation’s support.
