Cumberland students and PTA raise money to protect DPS K9 police dog

Sunnyvale Department of Public Safety Police K9 Rick will have an extra layer of protection thanks to the kindness of Cumberland Elementary School’s Student Council students. The students raised $650 selling items during the week of Halloween in honor of DPS’s fallen K9 Jax, who was killed in the line of duty on 10/31/2017.

Those funds were then matched by Cumberland Elementary PTA making a total of $1,300 for a bulletproof vest for Rick. When asked what they learned from the project, their response: “It takes a community effort to make a difference.”

DPS said, “We are touched beyond words by their kindness. Cumberland students, thank you for making a difference by honoring Jax and protecting Rick!”

According to the school, Officer Jesse Ashe went above and beyond sharing his stories and showing how a K9 works on commands.  Student Council presented Officer Ashe with a “poster card” to Welcome Rick and honor Jax, along with the check!
