Neither rain nor heat stays these disc golfers from their rounds

Two disc golf clubs in the Sunnyvale School District are better than one!

In the 2022-23 school year, Fairwood Elementary School fifth grade teacher Joe Gabent started the District’s first disc golf club at Fairwood. This year, the Lakewood Disc Golf Crew, managed by Lakewood fourth/fifth-grade teacher Kevin Davis, joined the fun.

At the beginning of May, both clubs competed in the second Sunnyvale Youth Disc Golf Tournament at the Villa Maria Disc Golf Course in Cupertino. Even the rain couldn’t keep the young disc golfers’ spirits — and discs — down. Although the wet and rainy conditions were challenging, the tournament was a success. “The players were still having fun, trying their best, and the parents were out there supporting them,” said Gabent.

“Players and families persevered, kept a positive attitude, and showed fantastic sportsmanship,” said Davis. “Even though disc golf is an individual sport, kids were sharing advice and giving support to others during the tournament.”

Raymond, a Lakewood fourth grader, was among the students who shared advice: “If you try your best, you will eventually get better at it. Keep trying and put the work in and you will succeed,” he said.

Mayor Larry Klein threw out the ceremonial first drive to start the tournament. During the tournament, two players got birdies (in the basket in two throws on a par three-hole). Both were on the same hole (hole #6), and both were by a player named Andrew — Andrew V. from Fairwood and Andrew B. from Lakewood. Evan from Fairwood took first place in the tournament. “I like that you can play by yourself and with a group of friends. It allows me to enjoy the outdoors. It’s challenged me to be focused and patient,” said Evan. “I like that I can play anywhere I go, even on vacation.”

Gabent will hold a family disc golf clinic at Fairwood in the fall and encourages staff and parents from other District schools to contact him for help setting up a disc golf club at their school. He hopes to have a middle school division at next year’s tournament.

Thank you to the players, parents, teachers from across the District, and the Silicon Valley Disc Golf Club for helping make our disc golf season and tournament successful! Thank you also to the Fairwood Explorer Alliance, Lakewood PTA, and the Sunnyvale Education Foundation for providing financial support to our disc golf clubs.
