SMS and CMS Students Excel During Musical May

Nearly 70 Sunnyvale Middle School students performed in the Music in the Parks Festival in early May. All three SMS groups: sixth-grade band, sixth-grade choir, and sixth-grade orchestra students earned first place and were rated “excellent” or “superior” in their category, with scores above 80 points!

In addition, Ramin Valanejad was awarded the Overall Student Piano Accompanist – Choral Classification.

Later in the month, 97 students in Sunnyvale and Columbia middle schools’ seventh- and eighth-grade band and orchestra programs performed at the Music in the Parks Festival Discovery Kingdom Six Flags.

SMS and CMS students joined together to compete in the district band and orchestra categories. The District band received a score of 91, a “superior” rating, and the Overall Highest Score out of all 13 bands at the festival, including two high school bands. The District orchestra received a score of 92.5, a “superior” rating, and the Overall Highest Score out of the eight orchestras at the festival.

The CMS choir earned a score of 83.5 points and an “excellent” rating at the festival.
