Sunnyvale Middle School Advancement VIA Individual Determination (AVID) students volunteered at the Kiwanis Special Games for the 15th year this spring. Kiwanis Special Games is an annual event that provides a fun and competitive day of activities for kids in Santa Clara County who are in the Adaptive Physical Education program. It is all-inclusive, with games for all ages and abilities.
Our seventh and eighth-grade AVID students practiced their leadership skills while they helped run events and guided participants through their athletic events. They helped with “hit the can”, the steeple chase, and the 100-yard dash. The students helped to set up and clean up all the events. They cheered on the athletes during the opening parade and most of them guided and cheered on small groups of athletes through their events.
