SSD first through fifth graders compete in Future Chefs

Seven Sunnyvale School District elementary students competed March 27th in Sodexo’s Future Chefs Challenge. The national initiative aims to get students thinking about making healthy food choices while encouraging them to get active and creative in the kitchen!

Sunnyvale School District joined several districts across the country. Judges included Superintendent Picard and Board of Education Vice President Michelle Maginot, Vargas teacher Sheena Jacobson, and Google Pastry Chef Samantha van Gogh.

The winning student from each participating district will be considered for regional finalist awards and will vie to become one of five national finalists competing for the public’s vote on a special Future Chefs YouTube channel. Congratulations to Koa Trinidad of Lakewood who finished first place for our district! His winning recipe will be featured on the menu at his school for a day so everyone can try his delicious Albondigas!

Congratulations also to second place winner Jonathan Nir, a fourth-grader at Cherry Chase Elementary with his “Amazing Beef Taco” recipe and to third place winner Gabriel Diaz, a fifth-grader at Fairwood Elementary, for his taco chili.

Maya Elizabeth Power represented Cumberland Elementary with her mini pork adobo burritos. Kamila Camorlinga Perez represented Bishop with her sopa fria recipe. Koen Sherkhane represented Ellis with his spicy sweet plantains with veggie roll. And our youngest competitor this year was first-grader Natalie Bisgood representing San Miguel Elementary with her fish tacos and avocado slaw with fried plantain and black bean dip recipe.
