Three authors visited all 10 Sunnyvale School District Schools for SSD’s first districtwide Author Week held October 3-7.
The authors included:
- Matt de la Peña, the first Hispanic winner of the 2016 Newbery Medal for his picture book Last Stop on Market Street;
- Kate Messner, award-winning picture books like Over and Under the Pond, Up in the Garden,The Brilliant Deep, and How to Read a Story; novels that tackle real-world issues like Breakout, All the Answers, and The Seventh Wish;
- Joanna HoNYTimes Bestselling Author of Eyes That Kiss in the Corners, Playing at the Border, and The Silence That Binds Us.
Students in grades 1-6 were able to read books by the authors before the visit so they could ask questions about their readings.
Bishop later applied through Writers and Artists Across the Country (WAAC) and they chose Bishop to be the lucky recipient of an author visit with Michael Genhart, a clinical psychologist and acclaimed children’s picture book author on Nov. 14. The visit targeted 5th-grade students who missed the district-wide Authors Week in October due to being away at Science Camp. Each student received a signed copy of his award-winning book, May Your Life Be Deliciosa.
