SSD third graders get a special visit from children’s book author Crystel Patterson

3rd-Grade-author-Event

Third graders at our eight elementary schools had a special author visit the week of Nov. 11 from Crystel Patterson, an award-winning author from Sacramento and the creator of the “Inspired to Be…” book series. She writes books that help kids learn to be kind, confident, and to follow their dreams. As a mom herself, Crystel loves to share stories that show young readers how to be strong, brave, and true to themselves.

After reading her book “I am Different”, students and teachers had an opportunity to create their own positive affirmation and share it with the event attendees. Each school also received a set of Crystel’s 6 titles from her “Inspired to Be…” series for their school library.

“Representation matters. Meeting and engaging with diverse authors and their stories enhances our students’ social emotional and literacy skills,” said District Librarian Julie Griffin. “Students can be inspired and gain empathy, and become more inclusive as they learn about different cultures and experiences”
