Vargas Elementary School and Columbia Middle School are a bit prettier on the inside and out after hundreds of volunteers contributed to a makeover weekend April 23 and 24.
The two Sunnyvale School District campuses were the beneficiaries of work done by 600 volunteers from Beautiful Day, an organization that connects churches, business and community groups to local schools for renovation projects. The two churches spearheading the Vargas and Columbia work were Peninsula Bible Church and New Beginnings Community Church. Parents, teachers and students were also on hand to assist.
This was the second straight year Vargas Elementary got the Beautiful Day treatment. A wine barrel herb garden and citrus trees were added. Volunteers did campus touch-ups and finished up some projects from the year before.
“It’s really a good feeling to see it coming into shape,” said Principal Annette Grasty.
Columbia Middle saw murals and walls get painted with accent colors. A community garden was built, and the library inventory was reorganized. New furniture was put into the teachers lounge and projectors were hung from classroom ceilings.
“They started telling me the scope of what they can do. We were blown away,” said Principal Mary Beth Allmann. “We worked with staff to generate ideas from across the campus and worked with students as well and came up with about 20 projects.”
