Facilities Master Plan being developed to guide future school improvements/projects

Sunnyvale School District has begun a district-wide Facilities Master Plan process to identify opportunities to improve and reimagine our school buildings, campuses, and classrooms.

The district contracted with LPA, Inc. in June 2020 to guide the Master Planning process. Components of the Facilities Master Plan include Educational Vision and Goals, Demographics/Enrollment Review, Facilities Condition Assessments, and Financial Analysis.

Stakeholder outreach has been an important component of planning every step of the way. The district and LPA, Inc. have conducted outreach with core focus groups including elementary, middle, special education, maintenance and operations, food and nutrition services, technology, transportation, and others.

A Facility Master Plan Steering Committee was formed in the fall and is comprised of district leadership, board of education members, and union representatives. A Facility Master Plan Committee was formed in January and is comprised of teachers and support staff, board members, parents/guardians, district leadership, city leaders, business leaders, high school district representatives and representatives, and other district stakeholders.

School site input that has been collected so far includes principal interviews, staff surveys, student surveys (grades 4, 5, 7, 8), a teacher learning space design input session, and next will be a public town hall that has yet to be scheduled. Stay tuned for a future date!

Once district stakeholder and community input are gathered, LPA, Inc. will draft Site Master Plan Concepts, conduct a Cost Analysis, identify Funding Sources, and will present to the Board of Education in June to prioritize and finalize upcoming projects.

Thanks to generous community support of bond measures in previous years, we have been able to conduct a complete campus rebuild at Bishop Elementary, comprehensive modernizations at Cumberland, Lakewood, San Miguel, and Columbia Middle, and partial renovation at Cherry Chase, Fairwood, and Vargas. Next up to receive a campus rebuild is Ellis Elementary followed by the modernization of Sunnyvale Middle School.

This new Facilities Master Plan is designed to be a living document and will be updated on an ongoing basis. More information about future opportunities to participate in the planning process will be forthcoming. To see future construction projects visit https://www.sesd.org/Page/1189.
