Health and Wellness Committee Corner

CMS-Volleyball

The Sunnyvale School District Health and Wellness Committee consists of nearly 20 district teachers, nurses, and two board members who meet quarterly to coordinate, maintain, and celebrate the amazing partnerships and collaborative efforts that go into keeping our community healthy and active! Here are just some of the highlights from the last trimester!

Middle School Highlights

Health and Wellness Elective offered at SMS and CMS!

Students are given the opportunity to focus on their health with the Health and Wellness Elective offered at both middle schools. Dedicated class time is vital to give students the tools and time to make their health a priority. Lessons such as sleep habits, social media, breath work and the power of music give students ways to practice mindfulness. Body scans, progressive muscle relaxation and stretching release tension and anxiety. Nutrition days teach students what they are consuming and give them samples to taste healthy snack ideas. A social health day each week tries to combat the isolation that technology brings.

Columbia staff and students build community through lunchtime sports!

Columbia Middle School (CMS) staff took on the 8th graders for the annual volleyball tournament! Teachers came out on top this time but the students are raring to go for a rematch! The CMS lunchtime Volleyball tournament was a huge success with eight teams of eight players going through a single elimination bracket. Teams were created by Leadership and the winning team was awarded medals. Next up is a lunchtime basketball tournament starting in January, with 8th-grade players going through a draft to create their teams! CMS also had a grade-level dodgeball match at lunch. The 6th graders ended up beating the 7th graders, but they were then beaten by the 8th graders! All of the students had a great time playing and interacting with other grade levels to build community!

District Health Highlights

Sunnyvale School District is fortunate to have strong partnerships with several community organizations that support our students’ learning and well-being. We continue to work alongside partners to promote wellness, healthy habits, and social-emotional support.

Bishop and Cherry Chase Earthquakes FIT Program

Get Earthquakes Fit presented by Kaiser Permanente is a 5-week healthy living and fitness program designed to teach students how to be Earthquakes Fit, which the 4th and 5th graders will be participating in. The program teaches students the importance of being healthy and active. Through this program we teach the students 10 fun “games”, that keep them active and share healthy living tips.

Lakewood Wellness Allstars

This year, every month Lakewood’s 3-5th grade teachers award a student in each class with “Wellness Allstar” recognition. Celebrating students who demonstrate healthy habits, decision-making, and supporting others. This practice helps improve school-wide health and wellness. They also have a smoothie party to celebrate their accomplishments.
