New science classrooms and labs for middle school students, new and renovated multi-purpose rooms for elementary school students, and an expanded neighborhood center are just a few construction projects the Sunnyvale School District has been working on and just completed in time for classes this fall.
Sunnyvale Middle School
The opening of the new Science Classroom Wing at Sunnyvale Middle School brings the science program for SMS students up to 21st Century standards. The existing middle school science classrooms were originally built in 1961 and renovated in 2003. The new science wing houses three science labs and two science classrooms, with amenities such as restrooms, science workroom, secure chemical and equipment storage space, and up-to-date safety equipment (showers, eye washes, and fume hoods). The building also has a 38kw rooftop solar energy system and SMS students will be able to monitor and evaluate energy production of the system.

Cherry Chase School
Cherry Chase Elementary School now has a 7,300-square foot multi-purpose room which can be used as an elementary school-sized basketball or volleyball court, as the school’s cafeteria, or a space for school-wide assemblies, complete with stage lighting and sound. The building was designed and built to the Collaboration of High Performing Schools model, which sets standards with environmental, sociocultural, quality, health, and safety considerations. Cherry Chase’s multi-purpose building also has a 6.8kw rooftop photovoltaic system.

Columbia Neighborhood Center
Sunnyvale School District has collaborated with the City of Sunnyvale on the expansion of the Columbia Neighborhood Center. This joint effort expanded the center to over 23,000 square feet with an office complex, meeting rooms, health clinic, and state-of-the-art fitness center, equipped with gym and locker rooms. The facility serves the needs of Sunnyvale residents and our students, providing recreation, education, and health programs and social services. The center has received Green Building Certification from the Collaborative for High Performance Schools for its use of high performance school design, construction, and operation.
