The Sunnyvale School District (SSD) is excited to announce the launch of a new English as a Second Language (ESL) class for adults. This initiative comes in response to a growing need within our community, as 245 new students joined the district from outside of the country last year.
Families had expressed a strong desire for English language classes, and the district quickly took action to address this need. The outreach coordinator at Ellis Elementary, Claudia Estrada, working in collaboration with the District Community Outreach Supervisor, got to work to find resources for the community. After discovering that adult education courses at the high school district were experiencing long waitlists, they reached out to Foothill College last April.
Fortunately, Foothill College was able to accommodate SSD’s request, offering to provide ESL classes at the SSD District Office starting September 24th and running through December 13th. The cohort will meet twice a week, and the district will provide childcare and textbooks to support families.
Registration for the ESL classes filled up incredibly quickly, with all 43 available spots being claimed within just 12 minutes of opening. Despite the high demand, there are still 192 families on the waitlist, demonstrating the significant need for these classes.
“I couldn’t be more excited about the SSD and Foothill College partnership for ESL classes!” said Vanessa Escobar, District Community Outreach Supervisor. “This incredible collaboration allows parents to learn English right alongside their students, creating a shared journey of growth and success for our entire community.”
“With adult school ESL programs experiencing impacted enrollment, we are so glad Foothill College can help fulfill a need of English Language Development for one of the communities we serve,” said Janie Garcia Cordova, Program Coordinator, Adult Ed, and ESL Programs at Foothill College. “We are honored to collaborate with SSD, a district committed to meeting families where they are by providing childcare on location at their district office where the class will take place. We are hopeful this is just the beginning of a wonderful partnership.”
Christina Gifford, ESL Instructor at Foothill College, will be the teacher for the program.
“I am so excited to work with these parents. I look forward to helping them empower themselves by building their English skills and confidence.”
We are thrilled to be able to meet such a high need for our community and are incredibly grateful to Foothill College for making this initiative possible.
