We are pleased to recognize Sunnyvale School District students who are well on their way to obtaining the State Seal of Biliteracy upon their high school graduation. Fifth and eighth-grade multilingual students will be honored with our Pathway to Biliteracy Awards, designed in alignment with California Department of Education (CDE) guidelines. Three awards honor and recognize student progress on their journey toward biliteracy: Home Language Development Recognition celebrates student growth and proficiency in their home language; Biliteracy Program Participation Recognition celebrates students participating in school-based biliteracy programs like Juntos; and the Biliteracy Attainment Award celebrates students demonstrating achievement in English and another language.
To qualify, the student must be proficient in at least two languages, one of which must be English, measured against rigorous standards. The seal is part of the California Department of Education’s (CDE) efforts to expand multilingualism among students, as it works toward awarding 150,000 seals by 2030.
Recognizing biliteracy is crucial because it validates and celebrates the linguistic assets of our students, directly aligning with our equity statement. By honoring their proficiency in multiple languages, we empower these learners, acknowledging their unique strengths and needs. This recognition ensures that every student is truly known by name, strength, and need, fostering a sense of belonging and value within our diverse community. Furthermore, it validates the cultural and cognitive benefits of multilingualism, encouraging continued language development and paving the way for future academic and professional success.
