San Miguel Elementary School collaborated with Reach Potential Movement (RPM) on an ambitious project: providing a bookshelf for every one of their kindergarten families. Reach Potential Movement is a local non-profit whose mission is to help under-resourced children reach their highest potential. The “Bookshelf in Every Home” program, organized and funded by RPM, took place at San Miguel Elementary on October 15,2011.
RPM provided books for the families, as well as community volunteers to help parents and children assemble and decorate a bookshelf. One third of San Miguel’s kindergarten class attended this fun and informative literacy event. The morning’s programs also included parent workshops presented in English and Spanish; the presentations gave parents tips and tools to support their children’s reading, comprehension, and writing at home.
San Miguel’s kindergarten teachers and principal, Brenda Guy, attended the event and were delighted to see so many families participate. The children enjoyed getting a personalized book shelf to take home, along with free books of their choice.
