San Miguel was recognized for the school’s Community School Model, which works to close opportunity and achievement gaps within the student population while supporting families.

Approximately 35-40 partnerships and programs are in place within the Community School that extend past what a traditional school is able to provide. Some examples include providing groceries on site, free glasses for students, dental services at the school, and a family resource center located on campus.

The school was also recognized for this work with a California Gold Ribbon Award in the spring of 2016 and an Ashoka Changemaker School Award in the spring of 2014.

Now in its 38th year, the Golden Bell Award is a statewide recognition put on by the California State School Board’s Association. It recognizes outstanding programs and governance practices of school boards in districts and county offices of education throughout California.

Experts from school districts and county offices of education comprised the 17-member judging panel, which identified 56 winners. The school will be recognized at a special reception and ceremony on November 30 during the annual CSBA conference in San Diego. In addition to receiving the award, the school will also receive a $1,000 sponsorship award for the exemplary Community Schools through Partnerships and Collaboration program.

The California School Boards Association is a collaborative group of virtually all of the state’s more than 1,000 school districts and county offices of education.

Also being given to San Miguel in tandem with the Golden Bell Award will be the 2017 Cities Counties Schools (CCS) Partnership’s Community Schools through Partnerships & Collaboration Award. CCS Partnership has been dedicated to creating a culture of collaboration among local jurisdictions since 1997. The partnership is itself a collaborative effort of the League of California Cities, the California State Association of Counties and the California School Boards Association (CSBA) managed by the Institute for Local Government (ILG). Congratulations, San Miguel!
