Sunnyvale Middle School had a “topping off” ceremony on Nov. 1, where Blach Construction hoisted the ceremonial last beam into place. The beam has the signatures of all of the students and staff who want to sign it.
The milestone marks the progress of the middle school’s Measure-GG bond project. The project will feature the third second-story classroom building in the district, including 22 new classrooms, 5 program spaces, an art room, teacher and student collaboration space, as well as a 20,000 sq. ft. academic courtyard.
The project is the culmination of working closely with the architect and the school committee to design a project that prioritizes a sense of community and provides a modern learning environment.
Construction began in the Summer of 2024 with the demolition and relocation of old portables, new underground utilities, and grading for the new two-story building. Construction crews have been busy craning all of the steel into place this week and last week. Project completion is scheduled for the Summer of 2025.
“School facilities are integral to student achievement. As the largest school in our District, we have waited years to upgrade Sunnyvale Middle School facilities. Now that we are finally replacing old portables, we thank the project team for understanding our needs and bringing our vision of refreshed and student-focused learning environments to life,” said Brandt Burns, director of facilities and operations for Sunnyvale School District. “The team has made great progress, and we eagerly await the day these new buildings enrich the educational experience for students and faculty, alike. We also thank Sunnyvale voters for passing Bond Measures GG and C, making projects like this possible.”
