Sunnyvale School District Board of Education Updates

The following is a summary of actions taken by the Sunnyvale School District Board at the March, April and May meetings.

March 5:

  • Approved the 2019-2020 Second Interim Fiscal Solvency Report. Sunnyvale School District continues to maintain its fiscal and financial health.
  • Awarded a Bid for the District Maintenance, Operations, and Transportation Yard Improvements
  • Awarded a Bid for a new classroom building at Cherry Chase
  • Held a PUBLIC HEARING and approved Resolution No. 20-13 Authorizing the Conveyance of Dedication of a Public Utility Easement to Pacific Gas and Electric Company in order to move forward with PG&E’s EV Bus Fleet Electrification program.
  • Revised board policy on intradistrict open enrollment to reflect new state laws.
  • Approved an increase in the board monthly stipend from $292 to $307.

March 12 (Special Board Meeting – Closed Session Only):

  • During closed session, the board discussed public employee appointment for the position of superintendent. The board did not take any action.

March 19

  • Adopted Resolution No. 20-14 Delegating Authority to Take Necessary Action to Protect Students and Staff from the Spread of Coronavirus (COVID-19)
  • Authorized the Superintendent to Align School Closures as Required by the County Public Health Department and County Office of Education

March 27 (Special Board Meeting – Closed Session Only):

  • The board discussed Public Employee Appointment. They selected a candidate and will approve the appointment and contract on May 7.

April 2 (Emergency Board Meeting):

  • Approved Resolution No. 20-16 Specifically Designating Public Works Project(s) As Essential Government Functions

April 2 (Regular Board Meeting):

  • Held a PUBLIC HEARING and approved Resolution No. 20-15 to Impose and Increase Statutory School Fees on Residential and Commercial/Industrial Development Projects Pursuant to Education Code Section 17620 (Level 1 Fees)
  • Held a PUBLIC HEARING and Adopted Grades 4-5 Fountas and Pinnell Classroom literacy curriculum
  • Held a PUBLIC HEARING and Adoptedf Grades K-5 Mystery Science curriculum

April 9 (Special Board Meeting – Closed Session Only):

  • The Board discussed the Public Employee Appointment for the position of Superintendent of Schools. The Board took action by a unanimous vote on the motion made by Nancy Newkirk, seconded by Reid Myers, to appoint Michael Gallagher to be the Superintendent of Sunnyvale School District effective July 1, 2020, subject to the parties’ agreement to and ratification of a contract of employment. The Board expects ratification of the contract to occur at its regular meeting on May 7, 2020.

April 23 (Special Board Development Meeting):

  • Discussed Mandarin Immersion Program exploration
  • Discussed COVID-19 school closures and shifting to distance learning
  • Discussed board goals, protocols, roles, and responsibilities

April 30 (Special Board Meeting – Closed Session Only):

  • The board discussed the Public Employment of an assistant superintendent, director, and coordinator. The board did not take any action.

May 7

  • Adopted Resolution No. 20-18 Denouncing Xenophobia and Anti-Asian Sentiment Arising due to Fears of the COVID-19 Pandemic
  • Approved the Amended and Restated Agreement Between City of Sunnyvale and Sunnyvale School District for the Operation of Columbia Neighborhood Center at the Columbia Middle School Site
  • Approved the Agreement for Consultant Services Between Leadership Associates and Sunnyvale School District for superintendent advisement services as delineated in the Coaching Agreement during the 2020-2021 school year.
  • Approved the Human Resources and Information Systems Leadership Restructuring Plan
  • Announced the 2019-2020 Employees of the Year

May 14 (Special Board Meeting – Closed Session Only):

  • The Board discussed public employee performance evaluation (Title: Superintendent). The Board did not take action on any item discussed in closed session.

May 21

  • Approved a Declaration of Need for Fully Qualified Educators. While this is not based upon a current need, it reflects a possibility that might occur during the 2020-2021 school year. It will allow the District to hire temporary teachers or substitute teachers for these classes if for any reason a teacher should suddenly leave employment or become ill or injured for an extended period of time.
  • Approved the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between Sunnyvale School District and California School Employees Association, Chapter 205 re: Article XI: Reclassification
  • Approved Classified Superintendent Salary Schedule at CalPERS Request and Consistent with Approved Employment Contracts (July 1, 2015 – June 30, 2020)
  • Approval of Classified Assistant Superintendent of Human Resources and Information Systems Employment Contract and Salary Schedule
  • Approved Resolution No. 20-20 State Education Funding in Light of Impacts Associated with COVID-19 Pandemic. This resolution advocates for adequate state funding for K-12 school districts in light of the already existing fiscal distress and the added financial impacts associated with the COVID-19 pandemic.

May 28 (Special Board Meeting – Closed Session Only):

  • The Board discussed public employee performance evaluation (Title: Superintendent). The Board did not take action on any item discussed in closed session.

The next Board of Education meeting is June 4, 2020.

Board of Education meetings are generally scheduled at 7 p.m. on the first and third Thursday of the month at the Sunnyvale School District Office, 819 W. Iowa Avenue, Sunnyvale.
