The Sunnyvale Middle School (SMS) Cheer Team exemplified the spirit of teamwork while performing at a recent Project Cornerstone event, where they brightened the room with their energy and enthusiasm. In addition to performing their cheers, the students spoke about how teamwork manifests in their squad, benefiting individual members while strengthening the team. One cheerleader stated during the event, “It’s about people who love you for who you are and will never put you down.”
At SMS, any student can be part of the Cheer Team. There are no tryouts and no exclusions. SMS teacher Sherinda Gonder manages the no-cut team, ensuring all students feel welcome to participate.
“It’s obvious that Sharinda cares so much for these students, and the team was wonderful,” said Debbi Headley, Project Cornerstone’s School Partnerships Director. “The performance was a highlight of our event and perfectly embodied our message for this year’s Volunteer Celebration—that teamwork makes us all better. SMS’s inclusive approach to building their cheer squad exemplifies that perfectly.”
This inclusive spirit aligns with the principles driving Project Cornerstone’s work. A community initiative led by the YMCA of Silicon Valley, the agency uses evidence-based research conducted by Search Institute and CASEL to help adults support children’s needs and development through positive relationships and social-emotional growth. Project Cornerstone’s volunteers work with students at 180 schools from Gilroy to Redwood City.
