Ellis Elementary recently transformed into a vibrant time capsule on Feb. 8th, hosting a “Throwback Game Night” specifically for African American, Afro-Latinx, and families of African descent within the school district. The event, a resounding success, offered a unique opportunity for families to connect, share experiences, and build stronger community bonds.
The evening was a delightful blend of nostalgia and connection, with families sporting their best 90s and 2000s-inspired attire. Laughter filled the air as attendees participated in classic games, fostering a relaxed and engaging atmosphere. Beyond the fun and games, the event served a crucial purpose: strengthening the district’s relationship with historically underserved families.
“This event was about more than just a fun night out,” explained Dr. Tasha Dean, Chief Teaching and Learning Officer. “It was a chance for us to truly listen, learn, and connect with families who have often felt marginalized. By creating targeted opportunities like this, we’re demonstrating our commitment to ensuring every student feels seen, valued, and supported.”
The gathering provided a platform for families to share their experiences within the school system, offering valuable insights that will help the district better address their needs. This initiative is part of a broader effort to build inclusive and equitable learning environments where every student can thrive.
This event represents a continuation of the district’s ongoing commitment to fostering equity and inclusivity, building upon the foundations laid by previous Equity Summits and the Student Equity Summit. The Equity Summit, designed to address race, racism, and implicit bias, recognized the need for targeted engagement with specific student and family populations. This year we are focusing on our Black families. By providing a platform for Black families, the district seeks to create lasting change in its interactions and responses to our communities. It is hoped this summit will build a more inclusive environment for all students and families within the Sunnyvale School District.
The importance of connecting with all families cannot be overstated. When schools actively engage with diverse communities, they foster a sense of belonging and create a supportive network that benefits students both academically and emotionally. By understanding the unique challenges and strengths of each family, the district can tailor its programs and resources to better meet the needs of every child.
The “Throwback Game Night” was a powerful reminder of the importance of community and the impact of targeted outreach. As the district continues to prioritize inclusivity and equity, events like these will play a vital role in building strong, supportive relationships with all families, ensuring that every student has the opportunity to reach their full potential. We plan to have more events like this in the future! Stay tuned!
